Capsule Endoscopy
Capsule Endoscopy at Springwood Day Surgery
Capsule endoscopy is a revolutionary diagnostic tool that allows your healthcare provider to visualize the inside of your gastrointestinal tract without surgery or invasive procedures. This non-invasive technology provides valuable insights into potential issues.
What is Capsule Endoscopy?
Capsule Endoscopy involves swallowing a small, vitamin-sized capsule equipped with its own camera and light source. As the capsule travels through your digestive tract, it takes thousands of high-quality images, providing valuable insights into the small intestine's inner lining—a region that traditional endoscopies and colonoscopies may not fully reach. This procedure is particularly useful for diagnosing conditions such as Crohn's disease, gastrointestinal bleeding, and celiac disease, among others.

General Procedure & Information
Preparing for Your Procedure
Preparation for capsule endoscopy is straightforward but essential for the success of the procedure. Our team will guide you through the preparation process, which typically includes dietary restrictions and fasting.
Dietary Instructions
You may need to follow a clear liquid diet the day before the procedure and fast for several hours before swallowing the capsule.
Procedure Day
On the day of your capsule endoscopy, you will be provided with the capsule to swallow and a belt to wear, which records the images captured by the capsule.
During Your Capsule Endoscopy
Capsule endoscopy is painless and does not require sedation. After swallowing the capsule, you can go about your day, although heavy physical activity should be avoided. The capsule is disposable and will naturally pass through your digestive system and be eliminated without discomfort.
After Your Capsule Endoscopy
Once the capsule has passed, or after approximately 8 hours (whichever comes first), you will return the recording device to Springwood Day Surgery. Our specialists will analyze the images and discuss the findings with you, providing a comprehensive understanding of your condition and the next steps in your care plan.
